If you don’t get the A level results or grades you need for your first choice university or find a place through the UCAS clearing system for university admission in 2011, then there is an alternative way to go to university. You can study for an ABE qualification instead of retaking your A levels and going through UCAS clearing again. An ABE qualification lets you start university in the first, second or final year (depending on the level of Diploma you study). Plus you gain a business qualification which is valuable in its own right.
ABE provides qualifications in:
All programmes have a Diploma (Level 4), a Higher Diploma (Level 5) and a Graduate Diploma (Level 6). There is also the Graduate Integrated or Extended Diploma (Level 6) which combines the Higher Diploma (Level 5) and Graduate Diploma (Level 6) into a single qualification.
ABE qualifications are accepted for entry by more than 80 universities independent of UCAS clearing. The Diploma (Level 4) is accepted for the first year of university for the equivalent course, the Higher Diploma (Level 5) for the second year and the Graduate Diploma, Graduate Integrated Diploma or Extended Diploma (Level 6) for the third year.
There are no entry requirements for the Level 4 Diploma, but if you have passed two or more A levels then you can start on the Higher Diploma (Level 5), Graduate Integrated or Extended (Level 6) Diplomas.

The qualifications are taught by nearly 200 private and public colleges in the UK (and 500 worldwide). These colleges normally charge less than universities, so you can save significantly on the total cost of your university education. Alternatively you can study on your own using the study guides, reading lists, specimen question papers, syllabuses, study tips and Student Focus magazine as some students do.
