Education Committee

The Education Committee acts as the policy making body of ABE. It comprises a number of distinguished professors and academics with many years' experience of UK and international education.

Dato' Dr Tan Tiong Hong (Chairman)

Former member of the Malaysian Parliament (1978-1986); Deputy Minister of Education and Deputy Minister of Finance in the Malaysian Cabinet, and Deputy Minister in the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office.
Former Senior Associate Member at Saint Anthony's College, Oxford University (1986-1992).
Former Group Managing Director for Guoco China Investment Limited (1993-1997).
Executive Chairman of CAM International Holdings Ltd "CIHL", listed in the main board of the Singapore Stock Exchange (1998-current).

Dr John Hebden (Chair of Examiners)

Dr Hebden is a former Head of the Management School, University of Salford.

Professor Tom Baum (Programme Chief in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management)

Prof Baum is a Professor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Director of Postgraduate Courses at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Professor Anne Britton (Programme Chief for Business Management)

Prof Britton is a former Assistant Dean and Head of School of Accounting and Financial Services, Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University.

Mr John Burnup (Programme Chief for Financial Management & PgDip in Business Management)

Mr Burnup is a former Principal Lecturer and Head of Financial Management Professional Group at Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitam University.

Dr Ted Johns (Programme Chief for Human Resource Management)

Dr Johns is Chairman of the Institute of Customer Services (ICS) and was formerly Head of the Personnel Management Division at Thames Valley University.

Dr Peter Martin (Programme Chief for Marketing)

Dr Martin is former senior oil company executive. He is now a partner in a marketing and communications consultancy and a visiting lecturer in marketing at various academic institutions.

John Potter (Programme Chief for Business Information Systems)

Mr Potter is a University Lecturer and Consultant in BIS.

Dr Terry Butland

Dr Terry Butland is Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International and Marketing, of Middlesex University. He is a qualified physicist and, before moving to higher education, spent his career in research and management posts in the nuclear power industry. He joined the University in 1997 from a large science and engineering public company where he was Director of Operations and Human Resources. He has chaired several national and international technical committees in the nuclear power field and has served as an expert witness at a number of international inquiries. His main technical expertise is in safety and risk management, where he has worked on problems in a range of fields including the nuclear and oil industries.

Emeritus Professor Mike Harvey

Following graduation from the University of Hull, Prof Harvey has held numerous academic posts. After gaining an MSc in Accounting from the London School of Economics, he then held various professorial posts at UK universities, culminating in becoming Professor of Accounting at London Guildhall University.

Prof Harvey has acted as a consultant for governments, professional bodies, universities and colleges, commercial and industrial organisations as well as the World Bank and British Council in over 50 countries. He has been involved in accounting education in numerous ways including having been on committees or boards of: the CNAA; BTEC; a Governor of Cranfield University; the University of Huddersfield Professorial Appointments Board.

He has appeared on radio and TV many times, has written over 12 books, on subjects such as accounting theory, management principles and strategy, some of which have run into second editions, and he has had over 500 articles published in seven countries.

Dr Penelope Hood

Doctor Hood is the Director of Studies at Anglia Ruskin University, visiting academic at the Postgraduate Institute of Management, Sri Jayewardenepura University (Sri Lanka) and a member of the Academy of Management Science, Sri Lanka.

Mr Robert Hurley

Mr Hurley is an Adviser Team Manager with UK Trade & Investment. He has sector responsibility for Education & Professional Training and is the lead adviser for the China, Korea and Africa markets.

He has held various board level and senior managerial positions with multinational companies, working in Europe and several African countries such as Benin, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Togo.

Dr Geoff Lancaster

Dr Geoff Lancaster is the Professor of Marketing and Dean of London School of Commerce which runs postgraduate programmes for University of Wales Institute and University of East London. He has written approximately 40 textbooks on marketing and research methods. He is also the founding Chairman of the Durham Associates Group of Companies, Castle Eden which has received the Queen’s Award for Exporting.

Dr John Stoddart, CBE

Dr Stoddart is a former Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University; former Chairman of the Higher Education Quality Council and the Education Counselling Service.
