Entry requirements & exemptions

Please refer to the following list of requirements and qualifications as a concise guide to establishing the level of entry onto the various ABE programmes.

Level 4 Diploma - 4 units


Candidates of all educational backgrounds are welcome and no formal entry qualifications are required.

However, applicants should have attained GCSE or equivalent in Mathematics and have demonstrated competence in English Language by attainment of one of the following (or equivalent):

Awarding body Level
LCCI English for Business (EFB) Level 1 or 2
Pitman/City and Guilds English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) / or
English for Business and Communication
IELTS Minimum Overall Band Score 5.0

OR confirmation by their college of equivalent standard in Mathematics and competence in English.

Candidates are advised to seek guidance from their college as to their level of Mathematics and English.


Level 5 Diploma - 8 units
Level 6 Extended Diploma - 13 units


Applicants must have attained at least one of the following:

An ABE Level 4 Diploma or equivalent
An ABE Level 4 Diploma or have passed at least two units in an ABE Level 4 Diploma. Please note that the ABE Level 5 Diploma cannot be awarded until all four units of the Level 4 Diploma have been passed.
Two GCE A levels or any Level 3 equivalent together with four GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English and Mathematics
BTEC National Diploma or overseas equivalent
An Access Certificate from a UK College of Further Education
Any NVQ Level 3 qualifications

In addition ABE welcomes applications for student membership from candidates intending to sit a Level 5 Diploma or Level 6( Extended) Diploma, who, although not holding a formal entry qualification, have been in appropriate employment for at least two years. A signed and dated reference letter from their employer(s) must accompany all such applications.*


Level 6 Diploma - 5 units


Applicants must have attained at least one of the following:

An ABE Level 5 Diploma or equivalent qualification from another internationally recognised awarding body or approved Overseas Institute of Higher Education
An ABE Level 5 Diploma or have passed at least six units in an ABE Level 5 Diploma. Please note that the ABE Level 6 Diploma cannot be awarded until all eight units of the Level 5 Diploma have been passed.
A UK Degree or Overseas equivalent, awarded by a recognised university, or a BTEC HND
Five years’ managerial experience

Level 7 Diploma - 5 units


Applicants must have attained at least one of the following:

An ABE Level 6 Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification from another internationally recognised awarding organisation
An ABE Level 6 Diploma or have passed at least four units in an ABE Level 6 Diploma. Please note that the ABE Level 7 Diploma cannot be awarded until all five units of the Level 6 Diploma have been passed.
A degree in a relevant subject awarded by a recognised UK or overseas university
Five years senior management experience. A signed reference letter from employer(s) must accompany all such applications.

Students and colleges are strongly urged to consider the level of written English required for success in this programme. Observation by ABE suggests that students without a standard of English equivalent to IELTS 6.0 (or above) are significantly less likely to succeed. The advanced nature of this programme means that ABE examiners cannot make any allowance for lower levels of English.*

*In all cases and at all levels, ABE reserves the right to reject such qualifications if they are deemed to have insufficient subject relationship.

The decision of ABE’s Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.



Exemptions


Exemptions from Level 4, 5 or 6 Diploma subjects may be granted to holders of qualifications of certain other professional bodies, provided that such qualifications have been obtained by external examination.

Please note that no exemptions are available in the Level 7 Diploma.


All applications for exemptions must be supported by acceptable documentary evidence (in English) of the qualification(s) and the grade or standard attained. Any exemptions granted will be confirmed in writing.


How to apply for an exemption:


Existing ABE students


Please complete the exemption form in the Members Area and return it to ABE along with copies of your qualifications, certificates and transcripts.

No exemptions will be granted from any units previously failed in the ABE examinations.
