Entry Requirements
Please refer to the following list of requirements and qualifications as a concise guide to establishing the level of entry onto the ABE programmes.
Level 4 Diploma
- Open access. Candidates of all educational backgrounds are welcome.
- However, it is in the interest of candidates that they have attained Level 2 qualifications (GCSE standard) in Mathematics and English Language, or can demonstrate competence through obtaining an alternative qualification of similar standard.
- Candidates are advised to seek guidance from their college as to their level of Mathematics and English. Independent candidates should contact ABE.
No formal qualifications are required but applicants should demonstrate competence in English by the attainment of one of the following:
Cambridge ESOL:
- Cambridge English: Advanced also known as Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
- Cambridge English: First also known as First Certificate in English (FCE)
- LCCI - English for Business (EFB) 1st or 2nd level
- Pitman/City and Guilds - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) /
English for Business and Communication
Registration Fee: £35 (GBP35)
The decision of the Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.
Level 5 Diploma / Level 5 Diploma (Higher)
Applicants must have obtained one of the following:
- Holders of an ABE Certificate
- Two level 3 passes (‘A’ level standard)
- A level 3 qualification, or above, as notified on the NQF or QCF of the United Kingdom. Such qualifications should entail a similar number of learning hours to that of the ABE certificate.***
- Overseas qualifications, as judged by UK NARIC, to be equivalent in standard to a level 3 qualification in the UK, and entailing a similar number of learning hours to that of the ABE certificate.***
- In addition ABE welcomes applications for student membership from intending Diploma candidates who, although not holding a formal entry qualification, have been in appropriate employment for at least two years. A signed reference letter from employers must accompany all such applications.
***ABE reserves the right to reject such qualifications if they are deemed to have insufficient subject relationship.
Registration Fee: £50 (GBP50)
The decision of the Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.
Level 6 Graduate Intergrated / Level 6 Extended Diploma
Applicants must have obtained one of the following:
- Holders of an ABE NQF Certificate or ABE QCF Level 4 Diploma
- Two level 3 passes (‘A’ level standard)
- A level 3 qualification, or above, as notified on the NQF or QCF of the United Kingdom. Such qualifications should entail a similar number of learning hours to that of the ABE certificate.***
- Overseas qualifications, as judged by UK NARIC, to be equivalent in standard to a level 3 qualification in the UK, and entailing a similar number of learning hours to that of the ABE certificate.***
- In addition ABE welcomes applications for student membership from intending Diploma candidates who, although not holding a formal entry qualification, have been in appropriate employment for at least two years. A signed reference letter from employers must accompany all such applications.

The decision of the Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.
Level 6 Diploma / Level 6 Diploma (Graduate)
- ABE NQF Diploma or ABE QCF Level 5 Diploma
- A UK Degree or Overseas equivalent, or BTEC HND in business management or related studies
- Other level 5 qualifications from another internationally recognised awarding body or approved Overseas Institutes of Higher Education
Registration Fee: £150 (GBP150)
The decision of the Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.
Level 7 Diploma
Applicants must have obtained one of the following:
- ABE NQF Advanced Diploma or ABE QCF Level 6 Diploma
- An honours degree in a related subject awarded by a recognised UK or overseas university
- A level 6 qualification from another internationally recognised awarding organisation
- Five years senior management experience. A signed reference letter from employers must accompany all such applications.
Registration Fee: £200 (GBP200)
The decision of the Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.
