ABE alumni, Chetan Rughoonundun is a great example of how ABE qualifications support career success. Now working at Absa Bank Mauritius, he says ABE has helped him build real-world business knowledge, confidence, and a clear professional direction. Read his full story below:
''I am Chetan Rughoonundun, and I come from a middle-class family. I have two elder brothers and currently live with my parents at Petit-Raffray in Mauritius.
I work at Absa Bank Mauritius Ltd as a Prestige Banking Support, which is in the retail segment. It has 11 branches on the island. The bank has a workforce of over 600+ employees and was awarded the Bank of the Year in 2025.
Products and services provided by Absa include personal banking and wealth management, corporate and investment banking, and business banking.
I am in the personal banking segment where my role involves helping customers in various fields, like resolving client queries and educating them on using Absa’s digital banking platform. My role is also to be a solution-oriented person to ensure a smooth client experience.
I was always passionate about business when I was in college. It was the moment when I decided that I wanted to pursue my career path in business, especially in marketing.
After completing my Cambridge Higher School Certificate, I was looking for universities to pursue my career in marketing management. Then, I came across a post on Facebook posted by Valdus Training Centre on ABE UK courses at that time. It was my dream to earn a British qualification. Thanks to ABE UK, I have been able to fulfil that dream by earning an international British qualification, which is affordable as well as flexible, and is designed to suit students’ pace of learning. Students can learn and sit for exams on any module whenever they feel ready. There’s no restriction on the order of the modules; exams should be taken. ABE modules and exams are designed to help learners understand and respond to real-world business scenarios.
After gaining my ABE L5 & L6 Diploma in Business Management and Marketing. I have been able to get numerous job opportunities, which were previously extremely difficult to get when I didn’t have an ABE qualification. With ABE, I have been able to route my career in a way which helped me gain a better understanding and expectations needed to succeed in a workplace.
What I enjoy most about my job is that it is challenging, there’s continuous learning and managing customers’ expectations in the right way.
The business knowledge acquired from ABE is highly beneficial. I remember when I started my Level 4 back in 2018, which was not free from challenges. But, with determination, courage and motivation, I have been able to successfully complete my L6 degree at ABE UK.
I would advise ABE students to be motivated, determined and courageous. Remember your motive of achieving your ABE qualifications, which will unfold numerous career opportunities.''
