Daisy Poh Yoke Cheng faced setbacks and academic struggles to find a turning point through ABE. Today, she is leading a business called Biz Art Resources, a cross-border consultancy working across Malaysia, India, and Australia in areas such as inclusive education, AI literacy, mental health, and community development.

Here is Daisy's story:

''I was born and raised in Malaysia - a unique blend of Hainanese, Tamil, and Malay roots, raised in a colonial-era multicultural community. I was born in 1971, just two years after ABE was established. From the start, my life was not easy - abandoned by my grandmother for not being a boy, misunderstood in school, and sidelined due to my sensitivities to people and environments.

But I carried a strong inner spirit. Though I was not a dropout, I was what I now call a “crop and chop-out” - someone who was prematurely written off due to grades (1E, 2Rs, 2Fs in STPM). Yet, I was hardworking and sincere, and I always delivered what I promised. I just needed the right environment to thrive.

Biz Art Resources is a compact but far-reaching consultancy grounded in the motto: Where Ideas Meet Opportunity. I lead it as Founder and Principal Consultant. We work collectively and independently across Malaysia, India and Australia etc., offering coaching, consultancy, workshops, and collaborations that span inclusive education, ageing, AI literacy, mental health, and marketing.

We often operate in underserved and complex terrains, from autism to ageing, from marginalised groups to mainstream institutions. I work closely with universities, community centres, NGOs, and schools, often acting as the bridge between academic and non-academic, grassroots and professional, rich and poor, “dumb to smart,” and “ugly to pretty,” because no one is ever too small or unworthy of opportunity.

After completing ABE at Regent School of Economics, Kuala Lumpur in 1993, I entered the advertising, branding and marketing world through agencies like McCann-Erickson, Dentsu and Labtyd. But soon, life called me in another direction, I became the primary caregiver for my parents for 20 years.

That journey of service, sacrifice, and caregiving transformed me. During the post-caregiving years, I re-emerged through community projects, special needs education, inclusion work, and strength-based development. Today, I work in partnership with Breakthru Academy, universities, and social innovators to bridge generational and cultural gaps through practical solutions and storytelling.

I never thought I’d pursue ABE. In fact, I only did so because it was the only path available to me at the time. But that only option became the golden opportunity. ABE was my safe space, a place to heal and grow after academic rejection and personal setbacks.

The subjects from Business Administration, Communication, Economics, Accounting to Management in Action, Quantitative Methods, Business Law, Cost and Management Accounting, and Marketing became my toolkit for life.

It gave me not just knowledge, but also identity. From that foundation, I’ve gone on to earn a Master’s in Marketing (UK), become a certified HRD Corp trainer, gain AI credentials, and deliver masterclasses in copywriting and inclusion. ABE allowed me to build a “self-sufficient and efficient” career that turns pain into purpose.

I enjoy going where no one else dares to go, tackling the unspoken, the underfunded, and the misunderstood. Whether it's supporting a special needs youth rejected by the system or helping an ageing caregiver rediscover their voice, I thrive in transforming deficits into breakthroughs. I particularly love mentoring younger women, the underserved, and cross-cultural talents, often creating platforms for others to shine through storytelling, training, or strategic partnerships.

With just a pen, a platform, and my ABE toolkit, I’ve moved fountains, faced tsunamis, and weathered thunderstorms often single-handedly. But I was never alone. I carry with me a pool of silent supporters, dreamers, and doers waiting to rise with me, all because one organisation called ABE, once upon a time, said “Yes” to a student like me.

To all past, present, and future ABE students, don’t just study ABE. Live it. Love it. Lead through it. It’s not just a qualification. It’s a quiet revolution — and you are its next chapter.

Don’t worry if the world doesn’t believe in you yet; believe in yourself first. ABE is more than an academic qualification; it’s a lifeline to those who are willing to start small and rise tall. It meets you where you are and takes you where you dare to go.

Use ABE as your passport to learn, unlearn, re-learn, and return with compassion, strength, and skill. Keep building, one subject, one project, one transformation at a time.''
